Leaks!
Life in Botswana seems to inevitably include dealing with leaks.
The problem with leaks seems to be a combination of less than ideal
quality workmanship, combined with a severely dry climate.
Plastic, rubber, glues and sealants shrink and disintegrate as any
moisture is 'sucked' out of them and the searingly hot Botswana sun is
more than such things were designed for. So we get used to roof leaks,
house plumbing leaks, and car engine leaks developing and having to be
fixed.
Our latest leak problem has been with our plunge pool pump and pipes.
Evaporation is high here (2m per year) but our pool water level was
going down way too fast for it to be just evaporation.
On closer investigation, we discovered that the piping from the pool
to the pump had been installed all wrongly and the two parts of the
pump/filter had not been installed level with each other and the pipes
were not sitting as they should to create a proper seal. Previously,
lots of silicon had been applied to fill gaps but over time the dry
heat had shrunk the silicon and the leaks were back.
Over many months, after various plumbers patching the problems rather
than fixing the problems, and many visits to the pool shop, eventually
all the many factors of the problem were identified and piping was re-
done, and other parts replaced. It has been an ongoing frustrating
saga, as each time we thought it was fixed, another leak would be
revealed. But to our great relief, it seems the problem is now
properly fixed at last. It's great to look down to the pool and see
that the water level has hardly changed!
But in the process of this leak, my hubby has made many visits to the
pool shop and has ended up having some fairly significant
conversations with the shop owner, after the he asked Andrew what we
are doing in Botswana.
Each conversation has been more in depth than the first and the last
visit Andrew was greeted with enthusiasm because the pool shop owner
is sharing with others what he is discovering about honour/shame and
how it plays out in business. Not only that, but he put in place some
ideas that Andrew suggested in relation to solving some HR issues, and
they worked! And now he is busy telling others....and wants Andrew to
make a plan on his return to maybe talk to a group .....we will see
where it will lead....
But it is all another reminder that what we think is just 'fixing a
leak' God might be busy 'creating a link'!
