More Butterflies

The past couple of weeks have felt like we were living in a butterfly house!

There seem to be hundreds of them filling the air, of various colours and designs, darting around and above at dizzying speeds!

It's just a pity that they don't stay still long enough to get many photos.

So it was special to actually get a photo of this very large - 'Citrus Swallowtail' butterfly (easily the largest seen in our garden)

If you look carefully in this second photo, you will see he has a little orange spot just showing through on the lower part of his wing-

This 'Grass Yellow' one was determined to never let the inside of his wings show when he landed, and he was way too fast to snap in motion,
…but don't you like the zebra stripes on his antennae?

So I was glad when he was joined by another one who decided to open his wing just the tiniest bit so you can see the lovely black stripe that formed a border all the way around his wings.

And then the pattern on this one, which has been seen in our garden before but only very quick glimpses, had an intensity of colour that was particularly impressive!

And here he is on the 'inside' - apparently he's called the 'Common Joker'!

and lest you think I'm mistaken, here is one (slightly blurry I'm sorry), with wings slightly open, allowing you to see both sides at once.

This next one is totally new for me. I had not seen it before, and I even managed an 'underside' and…

a 'top side' view

I also realised that these next two butterflies I had photos of in my archive, but hadn't shared them yet, so here they are:

And this one is called a 'maka sandman' - don't you just love that name!

And last of all is my ‘prize’ sighting of yesterday - a ‘Yellow Pansy’
Do you remember the post I did on the ‘Blue Pansy’ with its large mauve/purple/blue ‘spots’ on the wings that would appear to change colour!
- well this is the yellow-winged version….just beautiful!

Mind you, I didn’t notice what he was at first because with his wings closed he looks very dull and brown and well disguised!

It’s when he starts to open his wings that the hidden beauty and a tiny glimpse of his beatiful ’spots' is revealed!

We have had good rains and the butterflies love it!

The Garden looks washed and clean and is bursting with colour and growth - look out for more beauty in upcoming posts!
